Introduction and Theme

The economic growth and development in Asian countries have been increasing significantly, particularly developing Asian countries (about 7.6% p.a.) in the last three decades (IMF, 2018).

With the rapid economic growth and development in Asia, the urban economy, land and housing markets have dramatically changed. Many housing markets in Asia, particularly in China and India, have been affected in different ways, leading to concerns of a number of housing issues. These issues include housing affordability, house price bubbles, rapid urbanisation, affordable housing, labour demand shifts, deterioration of urban amenities and urban quality of life and so on.

Despite the changes, the literature, arguably, has yet to fully address the challenge of rapid economic growth in Asia.

This special issue provides further insights into housing issues in Asian countries.

The aim of the special issue is to address the housing issues in Asia. The collection of papers in this special issue would become a reference to policymakers and scholars interested in housing. The suggested topics for the special issue include, but are not limited to:

  • house price bubbles in Asia
  • urbanisation in Asia
  • affordable housing in Asia
  • demographics and mobility in Asia
  • labour and housing markets in Asia
  • urban economy in Asia
  • government policies and housing markets in Asia
