ChemSex - Apps, drugs and the right to pleasure

Special issue call for papers from Drugs and Alcohol Today

Guest Editors:
Marcus Day: marcus.p.day@gmail.com
David Stuart: david.stuart@me.com

ChemSex is a relatively new phenomenon in the drug using world.  It is the intersection of male on male sex, drugs to enhance sexual pleasure and communication technology.
There are a number of ChemSex articles that focus on disease – either HIV and other STI or the disease of “addiction”. There has been much less attention paid to the right to pleasure and how the intersection of technology and drugs makes that pleasure available, in public spaces or delivered to your door.

In order to encourage new knowledge on the phenomenon of ChemSex, Drugs and Alcohol Today (DAT) kindly invite papers for a planned special issue which will bring together articles contextualising ChemSex from the perspective of the right to pleasure.

Papers are invited from a broad set of disciplines and approaches contributing to the discussion ChemSex from theoretical, conceptual, practical or empirical viewpoints. Possible approaches include:

  • Definitions and framing of the concept,
  • Intentions and motives of ChemSex,
  • Different patterns of ChemSex use,
  • Psychological motivations for chemsex,
  • Motivating / mobilizing communities,
  • Chemsex and sexual consent,
  • Strategic challenges in developing public health responses to chemsex,
  • Concepts of risk and danger amongst gay men’s pursuit of sexual pleasure (chemsex perspective)”
  • Cultural stigmas and challenges within gay communities,
  • Obstacles to healthy community dialogue about chemsex trends.

Suggestions for contributions can be expressed by submitting paper proposals of approximately 1000 words (including references) to Marcus Day (marcuspday@gmail.com) the very latest on the 1 May 2018. In addition to articles and research reports proper, commentaries, overviews, book reviews and topics for debate are also welcome.

Proposals are recommended to follow the structure of “aims, methodology, results, discussion and conclusion” although the manuscript does not have to follow that structure. All proposals received will be reviewed and decisions of invitations will be sent out by 15 May 2018.

Articles invited to the special issues must be submitted according to journal style guidelines to DAT by 15 Sept 2018. All articles will undergo normal peer review proceedings. This Call for Papers partly springs out of the 2nd ChemSex Conference recently concluded in Berlin. Guest editors and editors: Marcus Day, David Stuart
