Systematic reviews of the state-of-the-art literature are key-components of scientific progress. This is because systematic literature reviews can pave the way for theory development, can be relevant for identifying knowledge gaps, and can be vital for flourishing original research frameworks (Webster & Watson, 2002). This kind of review – systematic and integrative – is a particular form of ‘research that reviews, critiques, and synthesizes representative literature on a topic in an integrated way such that new frameworks and perspectives on the topic are generated’ (Torraco, 2005, p.356).
This special issue will not accept bibliometric reviews. On the other hand, systematic reviews containing the following characteristics are welcome:


1.    The review should have a methodology section
2.    The content of the reviewed articles should be analyzed in depth, and, ideally, organized by different identified conceptual angles/theoretical streams
3.    A research agenda for future studies should be included in the review. The research agenda should encapsulate research questions for future studies
4.    The work is concluded by proposing an original theoretical framework which will be further tested by empirical researchers
5.    The literature reviews should be inspired by classic works in the field, such as Webster & Watson (2002); Torraco (2005); Tranfield (2003); Seuring & Gold (2012); Seuring & Müller (2008); and Gunasekaran & Ngai (2012).

All submitted papers should address issues related to the theme of the special and also fall within the scope of Benchmarking: An International Journal. This special issue will focus on publishing original research papers addressing the theme of the special issue. Bibliometric reviews, qualitative articles and quantitative articles are not in the scope of this special issue.
