There is an increasing need for organisations to maintain global competitiveness and this need has been intense in the hospitality and tourism industry. In an industry that is dependent on an innovative, dedicated and skilled workforce, hospitality and tourism’s quest for talented staff is constantly escalating. Talent management is an important part of the industry’s competitive edge and the quest to understand the concept has gained greater attention in academic research over the last 10-15 years (Gallardo-Gallardo et al, 2016). However, the concept is still somewhat nebulous in that it is not entirely clear how organisations develop and implement the concept. Although there is some research on the outcomes of talent management, such as that by Thunnissen (2016), this area requires further attention. This special issue seeks to address the complexities of talent management as they relate to the hospitality and tourism industry by examining the relevance of current theories and the future directions of this important component of the industry’s success.

Submissions related to the following topics are particularly welcome:
•    Current theories of talent management as applied to the hospitality and tourism industry
•    Talent management from employees’ perspectives
•    Global drivers and implications of talent management in the hospitality and tourism industry
•    Gender and/or race issues in talent management
•    Global mobility, expatriates and talent management
•    The impact of talent management on career development
•    Talent management within small and medium enterprises
•    New approaches and innovations to talent management
•    Outcomes of talent management and the impact on the organisation

General information for prospective authors

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.  We are open to receiving research that represents different methods and styles. These include but are not limited to new frameworks using multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary explanations. We also are interested in research that is based on compelling case studies of single or multiple destinations and organizations. Submission procedure
Prospective authors are strongly encouraged to contact the special issue editors regarding potential topics of interest or any questions/suggestions regarding the special issue. Abstracts (up to 750 words) can be submitted directly to the guest editors via email (m.deery@surrey.ac.uk) by 30 April 2018. Abstracts must be concise and to the point, with appropriate references. Full papers must be submitted by 31 October 2018 through ScholarOne Manuscripts, the online submission and peer review system. Review process

Each paper submitted to this special issue will be subject to the following review procedures:
1.    It will be reviewed by the guest editors for general suitability for this special issue.
2.    If it is judged suitable, three reviewers will be selected for a rigorous double-blind review process.
3.    Based on the recommendation of the reviewers, the guest editors and the Editor-in-Chief will decide whether the particular paper should be accepted as it is, revised and re-submitted, or rejected.
