Building Performance and Measurement

Special issue call for papers from International Journal of Building Pathology and Adaptation

Building Performance and Measurement

Building performance measurement and the delivery of sustainable and more energy efficient buildings is paramount. The work is of current significance, recognised by the many ongoing research projects exploring this central track.  The special edition will pull together research emerging from some of the leading research centres in this field, providing a notable body of knowledge and links to the authoritative figures and research in this field.

Internationally there are a number of current Energy in Buildings and Communities Programmes that are targeted at specific aspects of building performance, these include

  • EBC Annex 53 Total Energy Use in Buildings
  • EBC Annex 68 Design and operation strategies for high indoor air quality in low energy building
  • EBC Annex 71 Building Energy Performance Assessment Based on in-use monitoring
  • EBC Annex 70 Building Energy Epidemiology
  • EBC Annex 72 Assessing life cycle related Environmental impacts
  • EBC Annex 67 Energy Flexible Buildings

The issue will specifically target building performance measurements and characterisation. The special issue will seek to obtain insights on new methods of measurement at both the whole building and elemental level providing new attributes and understand of the build and its components.  The issue will go beyond the performance of the fabric,  providing valuable insight into the building operation and user/building interface, without which adequate comfort and building function cannot be secured.  Performance attributes associated with building designs are often stated with little evidence to support such claims, the publication will draw on research that will provide a body of guidance on measurement metrics and results identifying where performance has been achieved and significant gaps remain.

A list of potential themes may include:

  • Assessment of building performance
  • Air quality and ventilation in buildings
  • Thermal comfort and wellbeing
  • Energy efficiency
  • Green digital infrastructure and user control
  • Upgrades and energy efficient retrofits
  • New build performance
  • Whole building and elemental measurement
  • Building life cycle analysis and costs
