Introduction

To survive and thrive in today’s digital age, HR managers and/or HRD professionals need to keep their workforce up to date.  However, this requires identifying and bridging the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) gaps for each employee. With the help of sophisticated technologies, it has become simpler to manage and analyse a large amount of KSA data for employees. Yet, the importance of collecting quality data remains intact. This special issue seeks to explore the challenges HR managers and HRD professionals face in managing competency based data.

The submissions are expected to answer the following questions: (1) Why do organisations opt for a particular competency mapping technique? (2) What are the challenges that organisations face in implementing and executing competency techniques? (3) How are competency techniques used in the workplace? (4) What areas for future research are associated with competency mapping?

Objective

The purpose of this special issue is two-fold. The first objective is to examine and share the experiences of practitioners in mapping employee competencies. The second objective is to understand the challenges practitioners face in assessing employee competency in the digital age.

Recommended Topics

Empirical papers (fully developed qualitative or quantitative papers) on the following or related topics are welcome:

  • The Repertory Grid (RepGrid) Technique
  • Competency Assessment Centre (CAC)
  • Critical Incident Technique (CIT)
  • Delphi Technique (DT)
  • 360 degree feedback
  • Any other tested company specific competency mapping technique

 

The above technique(s) must be a part of the themes discussed next. The focus of this special issue (SI) is on (but not limited to) the following themes:

  • Editorial-Advances in Competency Mapping: Challenges in Digital Age
  • Qualitative Input for Reliable Quantitative Assessment
  • Mapping Digital Competence
  • Benchmarking Digital KSA Appraisal
  • Reconciliation for KSA Gaps in Digital Era
  • Evaluating the Worth of Jobs Digitally
  • Data Mining for Performance Appraisal
  • Role of Intranet in Job Analysis.

 

Submissions (well-researched, drawing strongly upon the research literature to justify the arguments made) developed jointly by academics and practitioners are particularly welcome. Authors are encouraged to give real world application along with the experiences and challenges faced by the practitioners in executing the competency mapping techniques in the digital age.

 

Review Process and Submission

Each paper will be reviewed by one of the Guest Editors and, if it is judged suitable for publication, it will then be sent to two independent referees for double blind peer review.

The final decision will be taken by the Journal Editor.

Each submission must adhere to the Journal guidelines (http://www.emeraldinsight.com/loi/ict).

Manuscripts should be submitted to http://www.emeraldinsight.com/loi/ict by choosing this Special Issue in the drop down menu by January 31, 2018.

The authors may expect decision within 6 to 8 weeks of the submission due date.

The tentative publication date of the Special Issue is July 30, 2018.
