Outstanding Service Awards 2013

Awards for Excellence

Outstanding Service Awards - Journals

For long standing support and consistently high contributions to the Emerald journals, we reward the following people:

Dr Ron Iphofen
Consultant and Formerly Bangor University, UK
For his work on Quality in Ageing and Older Adults

Dr Ron Iphofen has been editor of Quality in Ageing and Older Adults since the journal’s inception 14 years ago. This award marks his retirement from the editorship at the end of the 2013 volume. During his tenure, Ron has commissioned and published content that is practical in its outlook, and is fully inclusive of the views and contributions of older people and their families and carers, setting it apart from other gerontology journals. Ron has ensured that the journal’s content responds to the need for a research and evidence-based journal that has clear relevance to service issues for older people and also to the wider context of policy and practice development. This achievement can be evidenced by the wide range of readers and authors for the journal, including academics and other researchers, policy-makers, those working in services and practice, users of services and their families and carers.

Mr Peter Thistlethwaite
Integrated Care R&D, UK
For his work on the Journal of Integrated Care

This award marks his retirement from the editorship and gratefully acknowledges the outstanding contribution he has made both to this journal and to the field of integrated care. Peter was the founding editor of the Journal of Integrated Care in 1982, when it was launched under the title Managing Community Care, and subsequently edited the journal for 20 years until his retirement in 2012. Peter has demonstrated an outstanding level of commitment to the journal over its 20 year history and the journal’s success is a testament to his expert knowledge, networks and dedication. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Peter for his very valued contribution over the journal’s life thus far and wish him well for the future.

Outstanding Service Awards - Books

For outstanding support and consistently high contributions to the Emerald book series, we reward the following:

Professor Jafar Jafari
University of Wisconsin-Stout, USA
For his work on Bridging Tourism Theory and Practice and Tourism Social Science Series

Professor Jafar Jafari is seen as the ‘pioneer of tourism studies’. He founded the Annals of Tourism Research, of which he was Editor-in-Chief for 35 years, and the International Academy for the Study of Tourism. Professor Jafari edits two influential book series in the portfolio: Tourism Social Science Series and Bridging Tourism Theory and Practice. Significantly, both these series focus on the social science aspect of tourism which has historically been viewed as a management topic.
Professor Jafari has made immense contributions to tourism studies through his research and editorship of various academic publications, as well as teaching and mentorship of students and emerging scholars through his permanent and visiting positions worldwide. He has actively facilitated cross-disciplinary collaboration and networking in a field that has grown in legitimacy, visibility and progress. Jafar has also established foundational networks such as TRI-NET, an electronic bulletin board which serves as a means to connect the international tourism research and education community. Celebrating and Enhancing the Tourism Knowledge-based Platform: A Tribute to Jafar Jafari takes place in October 2013 to celebrate the contribution of Professor Jafari to tourism scholarship.
