Awards for Excellence

For long standing support and consistently high-standard contributions to Emerald journals, we reward the following people:

Sandra Fielden
For her work on Gender in Management: An International Review

Sandra is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist, an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and a member of the British Academy of Management (BAM) council from 2005-2008. She is also Director of the MSc in Organizational and Managerial Psychology, Head of the Psychology Group at MBS and the Co-Director of the Centre for Equality and Diversity at Work, at Manchester Business School. She has been the editor of the journal since 1999 and has been involved in the Gender in Management Special Interest group since its inception in 2003. She is involved in applied research within the public and private sector and has research in several areas, including European funded research into female small business start-up; economic growth; e-coaching and women's entrepreneurship; Black and Minority Ethnic small business ownership; and coaching and mentoring programmes.

Sandra is well known globally for her work as Editor of the Emerald Journal Gender in Management: An International Journal over the last ten years, and has been awarded Editor of the Year 2002 and 2005. Sandra has also been the chair of the ``Gender and Management'' track for the last three years at the British Academy of Management and is a founder member of the ``Gender in Management'' special interest group. She is well published with numerous journal papers and book chapters and is co-editor of two recently published books ``Individual Diversity and Psychology in Organizations'' (with M.J. Davidson) and ``International Handbook of Women and Small Business Entrepreneurship'' (with M.J. Davidson). Sandra is frequently cited in the tabloids, such as the Sunday Times, for her expert opinion in women's business ownership.

David Bennett
For his work on Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management

David is Professor of Technology Management at Aston Business School in Birmingham, UK, where his research is on International Operations and International Technology transfer. He has been the Editor of Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management since 1991 when it was acquired by Emerald (then MCB University Press) and at that time was titled Integrated Manufacturing Systems.

David's articles in the area of Technology and Operations Management have been published widely in many journals and he has authored or edited several books. He is a former President of the European Operations Management Association and serves currently on the Board of Directors of the International Association for Management of Technology (IAMOT). He is also a member of the Management of Technology Accreditation Board and the Peer Review College of the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

John Gennard
For his work on Employee Relations

Professor John Gennard has successfully edited Employee Relations for ten years and in this time has placed the journal at the forefront of debates and discussions in HR and industrial relations. The journal publishes successfully in the areas of employee collective bargaining, employer representation and always seeks to balance academic and practitioner perspectives. Professor Gennard has developed the journal's international Editorial Advisory Board which consists of leading academics and practitioners. He has also commissioned a number of high profile special issues on specific geographical regions including South Eastern Europe, Africa and Latin America. These special issues have been edited by HR experts and have included invited papers from leading authorities in the field.

This pro-active regional strategy has led to much greater internationality of published articles and a widening profile worldwide. Professor Gennard's areas of expertise include Graphical Trade Unions, co-ordinated national bargaining within a European context, and the role, function and power of HRM senior executives in strategic decision making. He also serves as a member of the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration (ACAS) Panel of Independent Arbitrators.

Adrian Ziderman
For his work on International Journal of Manpower

Adrian is Emeritus Professor of Economics at Bar-Ilan University, Israel, where he held the Sir Isaac Wolfson Chair in Economics and Business Administration. He was born in the UK and educated at Cambridge and Stanford universities and at the LSE (PhD). He is the author of seven books and some ninety papers in international academic journals. His current fields of research are: the economics, evaluation and finance of vocational education and training; and university funding, including student loans and cost-sharing.

He was formerly Senior Economist for human resources at the World Bank, Washington. He has served as a consultant to international organizations, including UNESCO, the World Bank, GTZ, the British Council, DANIDA, the Turkish Higher Education Council, and the Asian Development Bank, as well as to government ministries in Georgia, Israel, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, the Philippines, South Africa, the Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, the UK and Zambia.

He is currently Chair of the Schnitzer Foundation for Research on the Israel Economy and Society, Research Fellow at the Institute of Labour Studies (IZA), Bonn and Guest Professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China.

Peter Wilcock
For his work on International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance

Peter Wilcock is Director of Service Improvement for Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust.

Peter Wilcock is Director of Service Improvement for Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust.
His work is based on the premise that strengthening capability for continuous improvement in healthcare requires innovative approaches to helping staff and frontline teams fuse their learning of the necessary principles and skills with actually improving the care they offer to their patients.

He strongly believes that patients should be actively involved in this work and jointly developed an approach using patient stories to inspire teams to improve their care which is now used across the NHS and internationally.

His contribution to the field has been recognised by appointments as Visiting Professor in Healthcare Improvement at Bournemouth University in 2003 and Visiting Professor of Healthcare Improvement at the University of Derby in 2008. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Jay Kandampully
For his work on Managing Service Quality

Dr Jay Kandampully is a professor in services management and hospitality at The Ohio State University, USA. Jay served as Editor of Managing Service Quality (MSQ) from 2000-2010 and has been an Editorial Advisory Board member of MSQ since 1997. He has been the Editor of the Journal of Service Management since 2010. Jay also serves on the editorial advisory board of 12 refereed international journals. He holds a PhD in service quality management, and an MBA, specialising in services marketing, both from the University of Exeter, England. His undergraduate degree was in Hotel Management from Salzburg, Austria and from the University College Birmingham, UK. His educational qualifications are well supported by nine years managerial experience in Europe, India and in the USA.

Jay is the author of the book Services Management: The New Paradigm in Hospitality (translated into Chinese), and the lead editor of the book, Service Quality Management in Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure (translated into Chinese, Korean and Arabic). Jay has published over 100 articles, and has presented numerous papers at international conferences on issues relating to services management and marketing, service quality, service orientation and service innovations.

Rick Holden
For his work on Education & Training

Rick's interest in, and commitment to, education and training stretches back to his PhD, completed at the University of Exeter and to his first appointment, in 1982, as Education & Training Officer for Cadbury Schweppes. One of his more dubious early responsibilities was for the company's WEEP initiative -- work experience on employers premises - and where he admits some of the young people with whom he came into contact nearly did make him cry out in desperation. He became editor of Education + Training in 1990 by which time he had joined Leeds Polytechnic's Business School. A key objective of Education + Training has been to address the transition from formal education into work. Rick has endeavoured to remain close to this critical transition by virtue of his research interests in the graduate labour market and more latterly researching the teaching of skills to young professionals.

Rick's other professional interest outside of what is now Leeds Metropolitan University is his work with the University Forum for HRD. He chaired the 2005 HRD Research and Practice Across Europe Conference and is currently Vice Chair of the Research Committee, looking after the Forum's Research Honorarium. Rick also attempts to maintain the upkeep and development of the Forum's web site.

As a life time supporter of Bradford City football club Rick knows what it is like to go through periods of adversity. Whilst difficult times have been experienced as editor of Education + Training by and large the journey has been both insightful and rewarding. His best wishes go to the new editor and editorial team for another 20 years of successful publication.

Ross Thomas
For his work on Journal of Educational Administration

Professor Ross Thomas has been Editor of the Journal of Educational Administration since 1979 and involved with the journal since 1968. Over this time he has demonstrated an exceptionally high level of enthusiasm and commitment, not only to the journal and the educational research community, but also to Emerald Group Publishing, advocating Emerald as a publisher of choice to prospective editors and authors.

Under Ross' direction the quality of articles being reviewed for JEA has improved by ensuring that submissions focus on the aims of the journal as well as encouraging high quality writing, sound methodology and clear incremental contributions to both theory and practice. In addition, Ross has supported new authors through judging the Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Award for Educational Leadership and Strategy.

Ross will step down as Editor of JEA at the beginning of the of the 2012 volume which will mark the 50th Anniversary of the journal. He will take up a position on the Editorial Advisory Board.

Ross is Visiting Professorial Fellow in the Australian Centre for Educational Leadership at the University of Wollongong. His teaching and research reflect his long-held interest in the school principalship, the administration of special education, and organisation, systems and chaos theories. He is a fellow of both the Australian Council for Educational Leaders and the Australian College of Educators.

Dr Nancy Harding
For her work on Journal of Health Organization and Management

Dr Nancy Harding is Professor of Organization Theory and Director of Studies DBA at the University of Bradford, UK. Nancy's research interests are in organization theory and critical management studies, largely but not exclusively in public sector organizations. Dr Harding has been co-editor of Journal of Health Organization and Management (JHOM) since the year 2000 when the journal was still called The Journal of Management in Medicine. Dr Harding has worked diligently to enhance the reputation of JHOM in the academic community and the journal has become well-known under her editorship for its high quality and topical papers.

Joseph J. Martocchio
For his work on Research in Personnel and Human Resources Management

Professor Martocchio is Associate Dean of the School of Labor and Employment Relations, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He became the editor of this long standing research series in 2001, and selectively invited leading researchers in the human resources management field to write forward thinking monographs, advancing theory. Many of those monographs set the foundation for important programs of empirical research, which have appeared in leading scholarly journals. During his editorship, Professor Martocchio served as the Program Chair as well as Division Chair for the Human Resource Division of the Academy of Management, which is the leading professional association for scholarly management researchers. He also is a fellow in the American Psychological Association, recognized for his extraordinary research accomplishments in the field of applied Psychology.

Warren Joseph Samuels
For his work on Research in the History of Economic Thought and Methodology

Warren Joseph Samuels, (born 1933, New York City) is an US economist and historian of economic thought. He received a BBA from University of Miami, Miami, FL and obtained his PhD from University of Wisconsin-Madison. After holding academic posts in the University of Missouri, Georgia State University, Atlanta, and University of Miami, he was appointed Professor of Economics in Michigan State University in 1968, where he stayed until his retirement in 1998.

Warren Samuels has made many extremely valuable contributions to the history of economic thought and the methodology of economics. His work has been inspired primarily by his interest in generating greater clarity as to the economic role of government both in the history of economic thought and in contemporary economics.

Alexander Field

For his work on Research in Economic History

Professor Field's current research is in two main areas. The first is US macroeconomic history with a focus on technology and productivity. His book, A Great Leap Forward: 1930s Depression and US Economic Growth, will be published by Yale University Press this fall. The second, aimed at better integrating the human sciences, is reflected in his 2001 book Altruistically Inclined? The Behavioral Sciences, Evolutionary Theory, and the Origins of Reciprocity, which won the 2003 Alpha Sigma Nu National Book Award in the Social Sciences.

Professor Field has published more than fifty scholarly articles in such journals as the American Economic Review, The Journal of Economic History, Explorations in Economic History, The Economic History Review, Cliometrica, and The Journal of Macroeconomics. In addition to his editorship of Research in Economic History, Professor Field is on the Advisory Board of Cliometrica and the Journal of Bioeconomics, served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Economic History and Explorations in Economic History, and for over 20 years as Associate Editor of the Journal of Economic Literature.

At Santa Clara he has served as acting Academic Vice President (1986-1987), on the University's Board of Trustees (1988-1991), as Associate and Acting Dean of the Leavey School of Business between 1993 and 1997, and as chair of the Economics Department between 1988 and 1993. Since 2004, he has been Executive Director of the Economic History Association. He taught previously at Stanford University.
