Outstanding Service Awards 2009


Awards for Excellence

For long standing support and consistently high contributions to the Emerald journals, we reward the following people:

John Heap
For his work on International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management

John is Director of the National Productivity Centre of the UK and holds a particular view of productivity which suggests that to be sustainable in the longer-term, business performance should be based around all of social productivity, environmental productivity and economic productivity.  John is experienced in many aspects of policy development, in building productivity infrastructures and in designing productivity and performance improvement programmes.

This experience has been recognised through a number of appointments.  Currently John is President of the World Confederation of Productivity Science, a Board Member of the European Association of National Productivity Centres, a Council Member of the Institute of Management Services and co-editor of the International Journal of Productivity & Performance Management.

John also has a major interest in the productivity of education and learning and a particular interest in the design and development of online learning and associated infrastructures. 

Ken Bakewell
For his work on New Library World

Emeritus Professor Ken Bakewell joined the Editorial Advisory Board of New Library World in 1998, since when his advice and expertise have been invaluable.  He has drawn on his previous experience as Editor of Library Management, his work as Professor of Information and Library Management at Liverpool John Moores University and his continuing professional interests and roles. He is a former President of the society of Indexers and the Librarians Christain Fellowship. He has been unfailing in his support for and contribution to New Library World.

John Fernie
For his work on International Journal of Retail & Distribution Management

John Fernie is Professor of Retail Marketing at Heriot-Watt University. He was the inaugural editor of IJRDM after the merger of the International Journal of Retailing and the trade journal, Retail & Distribution Management, in 1989. He has developed the journal to be one of the most successful in the growing Emerald list of journals. In recognition of his achievements, he received the title of Editor of the year in 1997 in addition to Leading Editor awards in 1994, 1998 and 2000. He has written and contributed to numerous textbooks and papers on retail management, especially in the field of retail logistics. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport, a member of the Logistics Directors Forum and held office in the American Collegiate Retail Association.

Beverley Wagner
For her work on Supply Chain Management

Beverly Wagner is a senior lecturer in the Department of Marketing, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Her teaching and research focuses on the implementation and management of supply chain relationships. She has been involved in research into formation and implementation of partnering and business alliances in the Drinks and Packaging sector, also in the Microelectronics and Oil and Gas Industries.  Her research interests include buyer -supplier relationships, inter-organisational cooperation and networking.  Under Dr Wagner’s direction the quality of articles being reviewed for SMC:IJ has improved by ensuring that submissions focus on the aims of the journal as well as encouraging high quality writing, sound methodology and clear incremental contributions to both theory and practice.
