Emerald author awarded best paper accolades

‘Crowdsourcing for a Better World’ wins two best journal paper awards for 2017

Bingley, United Kingdom, 16 January 2018 – Emerald Publishing authors Dr Daniel Schlagwein and Katherine Choy have been awarded two Best Paper awards for their research ‘Crowdsourcing for a Better World: On the relation between IT affordances and donor motivations in charitable crowdfunding’, published in the journal Information Technology & People.

They have been awarded 2017 Social Informatics Best Paper Award by the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) Special Interest Group on Social Informatics and the AIS Best Information Systems Publications Awards.

Author Dr Daniel Schlagwein commented, “That Information Technology & People has selected our paper as the showcase for the journal (Emerald's Literati Award/Outstanding Paper of the Year in Information Technology & People) is a great honour. I wish to thank the journal's editors.”

“The paper is about two charitable online crowdfunding campaigns, comparing between the two campaigns, and more importantly against offline/conventional charity (such as charity events, door knocks, bake sales etc.). 90% of charity is done using conventional methods, so I hope the paper provides practitioners with good data and reasoning why they should consider crowdfunding their campaigns.”

The purpose of the paper is to better understand the relation between information technology allowances and donor motivations in charitable crowdfunding.  For practitioners in the charity space, the paper suggests why they may wish to consider the use of charitable crowdfunding and how they may go about its implementation.

Kevin Crowston, Editor of Information Technology & People, said: “Having our paper win the best social informatics paper is very gratifying, and is a nice recognition both for the hard work of the authors and of the journal as an outlet for the best research on the topic.”

Schlagwein and Choy are part of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Australia Business School, Sydney, Australia.
