Emerald signs the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Guidelines

Bingley, United Kingdom, 17 August 2017 – Emerald Publishing has become a signatory to Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Guidelines, a framework supported by the Center for Open Science (COS) that increases the reproducibility of research through the adoption of transparent research practices.

All Emerald journals will encourage adoption of TOP transparency standards, in particular working with the COS to improve the openness of data and research methods and design. As a starting point, as part of their author guidelines, all Emerald journals now encourage authors to cite data as they would an article, which gives data creators more credit for sharing data in repositories.

Becoming a TOP signatory forms part of Emerald’s engagement and support for an open research workflow, and position that ‘Open’ means more than just Open Access.

David Mellor, Project Manager at COS, said: “The fact that these policies are now used by over 3,000 journals means that more authors will know what to expect when it comes time to publish.

“These actions are becoming the norm, and with experience will come more efficiency, along with more credible science.”

Aimee Nixon, Head of Open Access Publishing at Emerald, said: “The TOP guidelines provide an excellent framework that enables Publishers and Journals to promote best practice amongst authors and to support the development of a broader open research workflow.”

The Center for Open Science is also encouraging researchers to take on its $1 Million Preregistration Challenge.

“Preregistration increases the credibility of hypothesis testing researcher and is perfect for authors with a project that is entering the planning or data collection phase,” says David Mellor. COS is giving away $1,000 prizes to 1,000 researchers who publish the results of their preregistered study. Further information can be found here - https://cos.io/prereg/
