Emerald titles increase strong CiteScore position

First full annual release of Scopus’ CiteScore metrics show increasing quality of Emerald’s journal collections

Bingley, United Kingdom, 1 June 2017 – The first full release of the CiteScore metric for 2016 from Scopus has seen Emerald increase the quality measures for over 57% of its journals, on a like-for-like basis compared to 2015’s figures.

Following on from CiteScore’s launch in December 2016, Emerald remains the publisher with the most journals in the Business, Management & Accounting field, with over 16% of the whole sector.

Among the highlights for Emerald’s journals:
• For the first time, the Journal of Services Management (JOSM) is the #1 ranked journal in its field of Business, Management & Accounting (Miscellaneous) with a CiteScore of 4.37
Supply Chain Management (SCM) journal has the highest CiteScore of any Emerald journal with 4.48, placing it high in the Top 10% of all Strategy and Management journals
• There are now 20 Emerald journals that are ranked in the Top 10% of their respective subject areas, including Internet Research (IR), Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal (AAAJ), Journal of Intellectual Capital (JIC) and the International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship (IJGE), which are all within Top 4% of their respective subject fields
• There are seven journals ranked in the Top Five titles in their fields, including European Business Review (EBR) and Industrial Management and Data Systems (IMDS)
• Overall, Emerald saw the number of its journals receiving a CiteScore from 252 to 268 journals, and an increase of over 6%.

Launched by Elsevier, CiteScore is one of a number of measures that help provide a holistic overview of a Scopus-indexed journal or serial title’s performance in Scopus. CiteScore metrics comprise a variety of indicators, making them part of a basket of metrics that provides a more balanced view of journal or serial quality than one indicator alone would.

Tony Roche, Publishing Director at Emerald Publishing, said: “We’ve always ensured that our editors and authors receive dedicated support to grow their journals, focussing on quality of articles published and maximizing their exposure to readers. I’m delighted to see this long-term focus recognized in these excellent results from Scopus and CiteScore.

“In particular, it’s gratifying to see significant strides made by some of our leading journals in Emerald’s core areas - like JOSM and SCM in business and management, and IMDS at the interface of operations management and information systems. That said, the majority of our titles are improving compared to the market, and we hope to see this increase as we continue to invest in our journals, stakeholders and associated services.”

CiteScore is a simple way of measuring the citation impact of journals and book serials. It calculates the number of citations received in a calendar year by all items published in that journal in the preceding three years. CiteScore is drawn from over 20,000 journals in its database, which is nearly twice as many as those that are given an Impact Factor.

In addition to the CiteScore, Scopus also provides more granular data on journals in a basket of metrics designed to give researchers more detailed information - the basket of data includes the annual CiteScore metric, a monthly CiteScore Tracker, CiteScore Quartiles and CiteScore Percentiles.
