Emerald raises more than £21,000 for Plan International UK

Emerald closes its 17th year of charitable fundraising for Plan International UK with a fantastic amount raised

Bingley, United Kingdom, 14 December 2016 – Now in its 17th year of charitable fundraising, Emerald Group Publishing is delighted to announce that it has raised £21,250 via various fundraising activities throughout 2016 for its charity of the year, Plan International, UK.

Plan International UK was chosen as the nominated charity for 2016 by a majority vote decided by Emerald staff. Plan International UK is one of the oldest and largest children’s development organisations that work with, for and on behalf of children in more than 70 developing countries. Plan International strives to advance children’s rights and equality for girls all over the world.

Emerald employees have raised the £21,250 for Plan International UK through a variety of endeavours, including:  an apprentice-style challenge; sporting events; auctions; and the Board of Directors taking part in the Living Below the Line challenge. This involved spending no more than £1 per day for all food and drink and it was certainly tougher than they thought it would be, but support for them was remarkable - raising £1,713 for that challenge alone.

Daniel Smallwood from the Corporate Partnerships Team at Plan International UK, said: “Plan International UK is delighted to have worked with Emerald over the last year, and we are extremely grateful for its dedication to fundraising, which has raised an incredible £21,250.

“The enthusiasm and commitment of Emerald employees means we can support more young girls and boys around the world, providing them with the education, access to better healthcare and economic empowerment they deserve.

“We are especially grateful for Emerald’s support for our Hurricane Matthew appeal earlier this year, which affected approximately 1.4 million people in Haiti. Emerald’s support enabled Plan International to distribute hygiene, food and shelter kits in four regions of the island.”

Sara Price, Emerald’s Charity Committee Chair, said “We have organised everything, from bake sales to sporting events and everything in between, and it’s been great to see everyone at Emerald get involved.

“It’s all been a lot of fun and it’s rewarding to see the hard work that goes into the events resulting in so much money being raised for such a worthy cause.”

Emerald’s charity of the year initiative continues to affirm the company’s commitment to supporting the wider global community.

Plan International UK strives to advance children’s rights and equality for girls all over the world.

Plan International recognises the power and potential of every single child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it’s girls who are most affected.

As an independent development and humanitarian charity, we work alongside children, young people, supporters and partners to tackle the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.

We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood, and enable children to prepare for and respond to crises and adversity.
We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge.
For over 75 years we have been building powerful partnerships for children, and we are active in over 70 countries.
