New high profile senior appointments to Emerald's books programme

Emerald in unique position as the scholarly publisher making most significant investments in its books programme

Bingley, United Kingdom, 3 October 2016 - Emerald Group Publishing has made a number of key strategic and high profile appointments, as it continues to heavily invest in its academic Books programme.

Philippa Grand, PhD - previously Editorial Director, Palgrave Social Sciences at Springer Nature - has been appointed as Editorial Director, Social Science Books & Publisher, Sociology, Criminology & Social Policy.

Pete Baker - formerly Editorial Director, Business, Finance and Economics, Professional and Scholarly Division at Palgrave Macmillan and Executive Editor at Wiley - will head up Emerald’s Scholarly and Professional Business, Finance and Economics Books publishing division.

In addition, Jenny McCall has joined as a Publisher responsible for commissioning Geography, Environmental Studies, Health and Social Care, Media and Communication Studies and Urban Studies for Emerald's book publishing division, while Amy Potter is Emerald’s new Head of Books Marketing.

These appointments follow Emerald’s highly publicized recruitment of Caitlin Cornish as Head of Books Publishing earlier this year.

Philippa Grand said: “I’m excited to be joining Emerald as Head of the Social Science Books team after ten years at Palgrave Macmillan.

“At a time of great change within academic publishing, I’m pleased to be joining an independent publisher that has a strong history of supporting and championing social science research.

“Emerald is a publisher that is passionate about the importance and value of the scholarly endeavour, and I’m very much looking forward to working with social scientists to establish a new home for the very best book-length research.”

Pete Baker said: “It is a pleasure to work for a global publisher that continues to focus on the value of the author and the importance of the academic and professional communities that we serve.

“I look forward to working closely with authors and organizations on work that demonstrates academic rigour and applied value to deliver unique, market-leading texts offering practical insights to academics and professionals alike.

Caitlin Cornish said: “Emerald is in a unique position as an independent publisher investing significantly in its books programme.

“The recruitment of such a highly experienced publishing, marketing and sales team very much reflects that commitment.

“As an independent publisher, our authors and their research are our number one priority. The knowledge and experience of the new books team – and the personal and supportive approach they will offer authors - will help Emerald continue to publish cutting-edge research of the highest quality for a global audience.”

Last week, Emerald announced that it had appointed Ernst Kallus – formerly Digital Media Director at Oxford University Press and, most recently, Director of Platform Strategy at Pearson - as its new Technology & Programme Director.
