Winners of the Emerald/HETL Education Outstanding Doctoral Research Award announced

The Emerald/HETL Education Outstanding Doctoral Research Award provides international recognition for the best doctoral research in the field of education

Bingley, United Kingdom, 22 March 2016 –  Emerald Group Publishing and the Higher Education Teaching and Learning Association(HETL) are pleased to announce the  Education Outstanding Doctoral Research Award (ODRA) winning and highly commended papers.

Dissertation topics in the areas of higher education, teaching/instruction, learning, curriculum, assessment, service or any directly related area were accepted for the ODRAs; and the entries were judged by a panel of experts chosen from the Journal of Applied Research in Higher Education (JARHE) Senior Editors and Editorial Advisory Board, as well as the HETL Research and Innovation Advisory Board.

This year’s overall ODRA winner is Dr Micah Modell, Indiana University, for his dissertation ‘Distinguishing between healthy and dysfunctional student project teams: an elusive instructor challenge’. He has been awarded a cash prize, certificate, a copy of an Emerald/HETL book and the opportunity to present his findings at a HETL conference.

During an interview with Dr Modell following his win, he said: “This award means a number of things to me, but the most important thing is that it gains this important line of research visibility within the scholarly community.  It validates, for me, the significance of the problem in the eyes of those whose judgement matters the most.

“This is further enhanced by the opportunity to present the topic at a HETL conference and I am hoping this will translate into collaborations on future research.”

The Highly Commended Papers are:
  • ‘The more I watch, the more I’ll learn. Teacher professional growth and development through video’ by Dr Steven Lamkin, Wilmington University
  • ‘What is it like to experience sound whilst playing educational computer games?’ by Dr Jason Rosenblum, University of Texas at Austin.
Jim Bowden, Academic Relations Manager at Emerald said “Emerald is proud to partner with HETL to deliver these awards which champion new research in the field of Education and provide a platform for those early in their careers, to have their research recognized globally.

“It is via award schemes such as this one that Emerald supports its community by ensuring their research has global impact.”
