Taking Religion Seriously in the Study of Organizations

Latest research from Emerald offers insight into the intrinsic importance of religion on organization theory

United Kingdom, 29 September 2014 – For decades, organization theorists have tried to explain employee behaviour in business settings. But now, one volume from the series Research in the Sociology of Organizations, published by  Emerald Group Publishing, a global publisher linking research and practice to the benefit of society, focusses on the lesser trodden path of how religious beliefs and practices affect organizations of different kinds.

Religion and Organization Theory, edited by Paul Tracey, Nelson Philips and Michael Lounsbury, pulls together key thinking from leading organizational scholars into one volume. It contains 12 articles organized around four key themes: religion and organizations at a micro level, religious organizational forms and practices, religion and institutional theory, and religion and social movements.

Paul Tracey, co-editor and Professor of Innovation and Organization at the Cambridge Judge Business School, said: “All too often, researchers have tended to shy away from how religion can affect an organization, not only from the ‘top down’ but also from the ‘bottom up’. This volume brings together leading organizational scholars that push forward our understanding of how religion and organization are linked.

“We hope this book will help stimulate research opportunities in this area and encourage researchers to engage in work at the intersection of religion and organizations”

Religion and Organization Theory is from the series, Research in the Sociology of Organizations. This is an established international, peer-reviewed series that examines cutting edge theoretical, methodological and research issues in organizational studies. More information can be found at
