Public and Third Sector Leaders Speak Out About Key Issues

New book from Emerald offers insight into leadership and how this affects decision making

United Kingdom, 15 August 2014 –Emerald Group Publishing, global publisher linking research and practice to the benefit of society, has launched a new book,Public and Third Sector Leadership: Experience Speaks. The book gives an insight into what leaders really think about the challenges facing their sector and the steps they have taken to manage their organization in today’s climate.

Effectively crossing the research and practitioner divide, the book offers readers the unique opportunity to read practical and theoretical research from the perspective of men and women who have demanding leadership positions in public and third sectors.

Speaking at the launch event, John Cooper, Chief Operating Officer, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Paul Grice, Clerk and Chief Executive of the Scottish Parliament, Elizabeth Ireland, chair of NHS National Services Scotland, Martin Stepek, CEO, Scottish Family Business Association and Richard Taylor, Executive Director, Fundraising and Supporter Marketing, Cancer Research UK, addressed the relevance of the new publication to their field.

Specifically, several of the contributors presented on the range of obstacles and challenges faced by public and third sector organisations and the impact on their leadership. These issues varied from the importance of adaptation in military leadership; to the consideration all leaders should give to the spiritual aspect of their roles and the need to remain customer- centric to inform company process and systems. This insight not only lends its relevance to the third sector, but public sector and to family business owners.

Brian Howieson, Co-Author of the book and Director of Management Programmes at Dundee University, said: “Little is known about leadership in the third and public sectors in the UK, especially from leaders themselves so this book gives an opportunity for their voices to be heard. Each contributor has provided us with their personal experiences of what leadership means to them and the complex changes their sector is undergoing.”

Julie Hodges, Co-Author of the book, Programme Director and Senior Teaching Fellow at Durham University Business School concluded: “This book is not only written in the here and now, but takes into consideration what will be faced by similar organizations as they take on changes in the economy, politics and society and how this affects leadership. I challenge any business not to be able to relate to the content presented in this book.”

Public and Third Sector Leadership: Experience Speaks is a valuable source of information for researchers and academics internationally, leaders and managers in the public or third sector, human resource professionals, organizational consultants, practitioners, managers, policy makers and students.
