From Oil to Knowledge – Education’s Role in Kuwait’s Economic Transition

New book from Emerald explores the initiatives used to transition Gulf communities from economies dependent on natural resources into knowledge-based societies

United Kingdom, 19 May 2014 - Education consultant and entrepreneur, Dr. Ilene Winokur, shares latest research on the historical and cultural contexts surrounding Kuwait’s education system in the International Perspectives on Education and Society book series, published by global academic publisher, Emerald Group Publishing.  Appearing in Volume 24 of the book series, Education for a Knowledge Society in Arabian Gulf Countries (edited by Wiseman, Alromi, and Alshumrani, 2014), the research comes at a time when many Arabian Gulf countries are embarking on bold national experiments to pilot technology and teaching in their schools as a way to transition to knowledge societies.

Dr. Winokur, who was recently appointed as the Director of Foundation Program Unit at Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST), comments: “The commitment to improvement in Gulf communities is evident, but the question is whether the political, professional, and popular determination is enough to implement the changes into the system and internalize them for sustainable reform. The National Center for Education Development (NCED) and the Ministry of Education has forged a partnership to accomplish numerous changes including curriculum, teacher certification and early childhood education. Although in its early stages, the reform is evident and with the support of HH Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah, there is a will to succeed.”

Published by Emerald, the mission of the International Perspectives on Education and Society (IPES) book series is to provide evidence and explanations of research and its application in the field of comparative and international education.  For more information, please visit http://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/products/books/series.htm?id=1479-3679
