Emerald Supports Free Access to Research for UK Public

United Kingdom, 3 March 2014 – Global publisher linking research and practice to the benefit of society, Emerald Group Publishing, has joined the ‘Access to Research’ initiative. Led by The Publishers Licensing Society, the scheme brings together UK publishers and librarians to make over 1.5 million academic articles freely accessible to the British public.

The two-year pilot was set up in response to recommendations from the Finch Group, a committee convened by the UK government to explore how access to publicly funded research could be expanded.

‘Access to Research’ aims to provide the public, students in further education, independent researchers and small businesses with the ability to discover a world of global academic research. In joining the scheme, Emerald has made a number of its Business and Management, Library and Information Science journals freely available to participating libraries.

Tony Roche, Publishing Director at Emerald, said: “Access to Research is the result of a successful collaboration between publishers, librarians and the search delivery solution provider, ProQuest. For Emerald, joining the initiative supports our vision to increase the value and impact of research by connecting people with quality content. We are delighted to be involved with this service and look forward to analyzing usage over the trial period, to further enhance the initiative and Emerald’s program accordingly.”

Emerald is currently one of 17 leading UK publishers collectively offering free content across a range of disciplines.
