Emerald Group Publishing is sad to announce the sudden death of Executive Chairman, Martin Fojt

United Kingdom, 10 February, 2014 – Martin Fojt, Executive Chairman of Emerald Group Publishing, has sadly passed away at the age of 53. Martin died of a heart attack whilst walking his dog on Ilkley Moor in Yorkshire, near where he lived with his family.

Emerald is a family business. Martin, son-in-law of company founder and Group Chairman Dr Keith Howard, joined the business in 1994 as a Publisher, and gained experience in several different roles across the company before joining the Board in 2000 and becoming the company’s Executive Chairman in 2006. Martin’s eldest daughter, Melissa, is a member of the Publishing team within the business.

Martin made a vast contribution to Emerald over the years working closely with CEO Richard Bevan to grow the company’s presence in every continent worldwide. Martin had a firm belief that Emerald’s success is built on its people and shared values - alongside Chairmanship, he was the active HR Director and set up key people development initiatives such as the company’s Academy programme and corporate MBA sponsorship.

A passionate supporter of numerous charitable, sporting and business initiatives in the Yorkshire community, Martin has held posts including former Chair of Trustees for Brain Tumour Research Support (previously Andrea’s Gift) and was a former Director of Bradford Chamber of Commerce. Most recently he was as an active crew member of the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat (RBRB), an independent Lifeboat, serving the East Coast of Yorkshire. Martin also initiated Emerald’s annual sponsorship of a chosen charity. Over the years, these have included Andrea’s Gift, Simon on the Streets, Women and Orphans in Rural Kenya (W.O.R.K.), and poignantly this year’s charity, Heart Research UK.

Martin was a lifelong supporter of Leeds United Football Club, having himself played as a semi-professional for Farsley Celtic. He was also a keen cricket fan, regularly attending Yorkshire games at Headingley and following England’s test matches around the world.

Most important of all to Martin was his family, and he leaves his wife, Karen, and three children Melissa, Siobhan and Howard. He will be sadly missed by family, friends and colleagues at Emerald.
