National Hug Your Boss Day – Emerald and Cary Cooper examine how the ‘huggability’ of your boss affects your wellbeing

Free access to research articles which investigate this topic

United Kingdom, 21st August 2013 – Would you hug your boss? Does your boss raise your self-confidence and motivation at work, or are they a cause of stress, a lack of motivation and a feeling of dread in the morning?

Friday 23rd August is National Hug Your Boss Day, a day designed to promote and enhance workplace relationships and highlight the importance of managerial styles and their effect on employee satisfaction and wellbeing. To mark the day, Emerald Group Publishing has selected a range of research articles which examine how managerial styles affect employee engagement and satisfaction. They are freely available until 9th September by visiting:

The articles, including one from distinguished professor of organisational psychology Cary Cooper, explore a range of themes including the relationship between an employee’s productivity and their psychological well-being, the link between leader behaviour and employee engagement, and the impact that emotionally intelligent leadership plays in employee engagement and productivity.

Professor Cooper comments: “For me, National Hug Your Boss Day highlights the importance of workplace relationships and the significant role that good management plays in the psychological wellbeing and workplace motivation of employees. Though hugging your boss is theme of the day, I question whether many bosses actually deserve a hug, and, conversely whether they should be doing more to psychologically ‘hug’ their employees. By this I mean that today’s managers need to move away from abrasive and controlling management styles and adopt more engaging and approachable ones.

This selection of articles for National Hug Your Boss Day explores this further, providing insight into the impact that leaders' managerial styles have, not only on employees' motivation and productivity, but on their job satisfaction and psychological wellbeing.”

These research articles, along with further input from Professor Cooper, can be freely accessed by visiting Emerald’s dedicated National Hug Your Boss Day page:
