‘Emerald on Board’: Celebrating an innovative project with Yorkshire Business in the Arts

Emerald employee scheme provides unique service to local arts organisations

Bingley, United Kingdom, 11 July 2013 – On Friday 5 July, Dr Keith Howard, Founder of academic publisher Emerald, welcomed Richard Brown, Managing Director of Yorkshire Business in the Arts, and representatives of local arts organisations at the company’s headquarters in Bingley. They gathered to celebrate the ‘Emerald on Board’ project, a year-long innovative initiative which gave Emerald employees the opportunity to sit on the Board of Arts organisations throughout Yorkshire.

‘Emerald on Board’ has been a pilot for a new and improved development programme from Yorkshire Business in the Arts, which has over 20 years’ experience in this area. The scheme aims to provide a unique alternative service to local arts organisations to collaborate with the private sector.

Seven Emerald employees took part in the scheme. They received tailored training from Yorkshire Business in the Arts and were supported by Emerald with a series of action-learning sets through the 12-month period. As a result, each individual has gained highly valuable new experience and skills. Equally, arts and culture organisations in the region have benefited from new business perspectives at Board level.

Supriya Nagarajan, Artistic Director at Manasamitra in Dewsbury; Ajit Singh, Deputy CEO of Kala Sangam, in Bradford; and Chloe Whitehead, Director of Proper Job Theatre Company, in Huddersfield, were among the arts organisations’ representatives attending the event.

Chloe Whitehead commented: “Our organisation has greatly benefited from the 'On Board' scheme.  It was inspiring coming to Emerald on Friday. It was wonderful to see how the values of Keith Howard and his commitment to the arts have been disseminated through the whole organisation. If more companies had this attitude to the arts we would have a more vibrant sector and a richer arts culture.“

Although the official scheme has now come to an end, it is understood that the participating Emerald employees will continue to sit on the Board of their respective organisations in the longer term.

Emerald has a long standing tradition of championing local projects that present creative and educational merits. The ‘Emerald on Board’ scheme provided the perfect opportunity to bridge employee development through action-learning with making a positive impact on local communities.
