How workplace appearance codes punish those who resist the 'norm'

United Kingdom, 2 July 2013 – Are people being forced into traditional gender roles in the workplace? In a modern ‘equal’ society, do we need to question how organizations can impose a ‘one size fits all’ dress code on its employees without discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity?

In the recent special issue of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, entitled “Dress and appearance codes in the workplace: gender, sexuality, law and legal institutions,” Guest Editors Todd Brower and Jackie Jones bring workplace appearance policies and the effect they have on women and sexual minorities under scrutiny. Featuring papers based upon those presented at the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Conference held in Vienna in July 2012, the special issue contributes to the study of gender, sexuality and sexual orientation in organisations, and the development and implementation of legal practices and policies surrounding equality and diversity. It offers insight into the sexualized stereotype forced upon women at work, the multitude of challenges faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in the workplace, and the development and implementation of equality and diversity case law, policies and practice.

Todd Brower and Jackie Jones comment, “The papers in the issue adopt a critical analysis of the way workplace appearance policies affect the gender and sexual orientation identity of workers, which has profound implications for the ordering of society, of business, and of legal institutions themselves.”

Published by Emerald Group Publishing, this special issue is volume 32, issue 5 of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, an international journal which offers a platform for the critical exploration of equal opportunity concerns, including gender, ethnicity, class, disability, age, sexual orientation, religion in society and the workplace.
