Emerald signs up to Initiative for Open Citations (I4OC)

I4OC will help in building new services for Emerald’s communities, in line with user-centric approach to products and services

Bingley, United Kingdom, 4 July 2017 – Emerald Publishing has signed up to the Initiative for Open Citations (I4OC), a collaboration between scholarly publishers, researchers and other interested parties to promote the unrestricted availability of scholarly citation data.

Before I4OC, only around 1% of the publications with reference data deposited in Crossref made their references freely available. That figure is now expected to leap to 40%.

One benefit of a fully open citation dataset is the establishment of a global public web of linked scholarly citation data to enhance the discoverability of published content.

Another is the ability to build new services over the open citation data, for the benefit of publishers, researchers, funding agencies, academic institutions and the general public. The open availability of citation data will help funders better evaluate the research they fund.

In a blog on why they helped co-found I4OC, Wikimedia Foundation said: “Citations are the backbone of scholarly knowledge. They help researchers verify information, build on the existing knowledge we already know, and generate opportunity for new discoveries. Citations are not only relevant to academia. They are the foundation for how we know what we know.”

Michael Roberts, Content Discovery Manager at Emerald, said: “Signing up to I4OC is one of a number of open data initiatives we’re undertaking at Emerald.

“Becoming part of I4OC will help make metadata attractive to the benefit of Emerald content, thereby aligning with Emerald’s work around improving discoverability on an ongoing basis.

“I4OC will also aid us in building new services for our communities, in line with our user-centric approach to products and services.”

The Internet Archive, Mozilla, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, and 29 other projects and organizations - including publishers SAGE Publishing, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis Group, and Wiley - have formally put their names behind I4OC as stakeholders in support of openly accessible citations.
